The day the shooting stopped in The War to End All Wars, a large electric sign on the pinnacle of the Château Laurier flashed a single word —“Victory” — to the 25,000 ecstatic citizens who’d poured onto the streets of Ottawa to celebrate.
Until then, the sign had conveyed a rather different message — “Buy Victory Bonds” — but an intrepid hotel electrician managed to disable the first and final words.
